Kencoco Briquettes

Kencoco Briquettes, located in Mombasa and Kilifi, Kenya, makes premium charcoal briquettes from dried coconut shell waste. They have found an ingenious way to make them even more sustainable. By carbonising moringa seed coat, an agricultural waste product previously discarded, Kencoco has created a viable substitute for the sawdust traditionally used in their briquettes, cutting reliance on wood-derived materials in the process. This provides a low-cost alternative to harmful fuels like firewood and kerosene for hotels and schools, reducing pressure on forests and providing a cleaner alternative to conventional cooking fuels.

For Kencoco, the next step is scaling up production. Support from Nature’s Pitch is enabling them to process more material each day through a new set of solar drying trays, maintaining consistent quality and keeping production running year-round.
